It’s important to recognise that Barbie (2023) criticises both the patriarchy AND the matriarchy. Yes, the Ken’s are just accessories to the Barbies. Yes, they don’t have any say in the government they live under. That’s the point, you’re supposed to feel awful, you’re supposed to want the Kens to have their own agency, you’re supposed to want equality. The Barbie movie explicitly states that the way Barbie treats Ken is wrong, so much so that once he finds a safe space for his masculinity and individual identity he’s so excited to share it with the other Kens.
But they go overboard and replace a matriarchy with a patriarchy and now the same issue exists but in reverse. That’s the POINT!! THATS THE POINT!!! Barbie is not anti-men it’s pro equality PLEASE understand this
13th Aug 2023 UPDATE:
Heeeeey howdy!!
Due to the IMMENSE comments and discussion on this post (thanks ya’ll!!) I’ve decided to update my post with my recent opinions and hopefully clearer explanations!!
First, my original post only considers a very small and very vague analysis of the film!!
Since making this I’ve read all your comments and learned quite a bit about the matriarchy as it appears in human civilisation. Originally, I was pitting the patriarchy and the matriarchy against each other as though the results of their implementation were equal in the film.
They were not!! Below is the definition of matriarchy I’ll be working off of.
Matriarchy Simple Definition;
Matriarchy is a social system in which women hold the primary power positions in roles of authority. In a broader sense it can also extend to moral authority, social privilege and control of property.
There’s a lot to talk about in the Barbie film that would fit better in an essay, so I’ll try and condense it into this;
To me, Barbie (2023) is a film about the female experience and the shared connection between women that persists through childhood and adulthood, support and harassment, suffering and joy, mother and daughter.
It uses Barbie as its figurehead because of the immense societal and political impact the doll has had on women, both good and bad (as explained in the film).
The male experience as seen in Barbie (2023) is not the sole focus of the film- rather, it’s an accessory (as the Kens are) to Barbie’s story, and a necessary aspect of exploration to truly highlight the importance of individualism and healthy personal exploration.
I want to make clear that I in no way think the treatment of the Kens was just as bad as the treatment of the Barbies. I also still agree that the matriarchy fostered by the Barbies wasn’t good for the Kens.
Additionally, I’m aware that this take on Barbie (2023) works strictly within the assumed heteronormative boundaries of gender. There is a lot of nuance in the Barbie film and I don’t think everything can be covered or explained in on Tumblr post— but I hope this clarification helps!!
I hope you’re all coming to your own conclusions and analysis of the film in a way that makes sense to you. And for those of you engaging in online conversations and discourse about it, I hope you’re keeping yourself and others happy and safe!!!
This child will be my niece 😭😭 I wish you to pray for her with mercy and help my child and help me escape death and hunger save me and my child please please.
Hey, guys, my friend Shahed Muhammad @shahednhall reached out to me to share their story with you all, so please listen.
Pay attention, don’t scroll past this.
Shahed is a 20 year old college student who used to study at Al-Azhar University and lived a happy life with her family in Southern Gaza.
But since the genocide began last October, their family have had to see and experience so much loss and destruction. They lost the family home their father had built, her education, as well a dearly beloved friend and their entire family to the bombing of the zionist occupation forces.
Shahed now fears that she might lose the rest of the family the same way too.
In her own words:
“My father is a heart patientand needs to leave Gaza City very quickly in order for treatment to take place. My sisters, desperately young and old, suffer from hepatitis.
We are in this time living a primitive life. We live in a small tent that can barely accommodate a family of 15 people.
There is not enough food and there is no clean water. It is all polluted. We live in the middle of bombs in the middle of destruction. Everything has been destroyed from the house of my father’s work and toil for years.
Imagine, my little sisters, they see death. Their psychological state has become very difficult. I don’t know how I can review any example before the war, because they are children and now war is all they know.
We must help them so that their condition does not get worse, because they are children who tremble and tremble all the time. They see murder at this young age.
Can you imagine children who should be out playing, but instead struggle for basic shelter and safety?”
Currently the health of Shahed’s sisters and her parents are rapidly deteriorating due to the lack of medical resources in Gaza at the moment. She has informed me that her sisters are currently staying at a hospital. I cannot stress enough how dire their situation is.
Please help Shahed save her family. They need your care and attention now more than ever.
Their gfm has slowed down a worrying amount recently, having only raised $60 in the past 24 hours, when they are NOWHERE near their goal.
Please share, donate, and don’t forget to follow Shahed’s blog@shahednhall for direct updates on her situation. I want to remind you that recently tumblr has been banning a lot of palestinian accounts, so it is VERY important that you follow their accounts so that we notice when it happens.
Please don’t let them be forgotten. They need you.
UPDATE:
Guys Shahed just let me know that both of her little sisters, who as i mentioned earlier had both contracted hepatitis from polluted water, have taken a turn for the worse.
There are no hospitals left in Gaza where they can be properly treated in the long term and prices of food and other essentials have skyrocketed, so much so that they are unable to feed themselves at the moment due to a lack of funds.
In her own words:
We are a large family, most of us children. How many of us do you know that children with very weak immunity need care? We are in the midst of suffering from a lack of everything. Imagine that I am searching all day for food for my family.
Your family. Imagine living in a tent that can barely accommodate us because of the destruction of our home. We have nothing.
Shahed is the only one who can raise funds for all of them at the moment, and her gfm has been moving sluggishly for some time now. With only $9,670 USD raised of $50,000 goal she doesnt have even a fifth of the amount she needs yet.
She fears that she might lose her family if this keeps up.
She is only 20 and she has to carry this burden for the sake of her family because she has no other choice. Please help her out, no one should ever be in this kind of situation.
Please keep sharing and donate any amount you can, she needs these funds urgently. Please follow her blog at @shahednhall for direct updates!!!
I hope that everyone listens to my story and help me spread my story more. Donate in order to save my sisters. The war is more intensive. My family needs you. I need you and your donation will make a big difference in the life of an entire family. Participate in that.
My mother, in her mid-50s, just came out as aromantic. She never knew there was a word for what she felt. She asked if this means she’s “part of the LGBT now”, and I got to happily inform her that there are more letters now, and Aces and Aros are absolutely a part of our community.
It’s so important to remember that there are people in generations before us who still don’t know themselves, and self-discovery is for any age. They should know they have a community. I am so proud of new, older queers!
Isn’t it ironic how Ever after high, a show adamant on promoting the idea of creating new stories instead of retelling the same ones, was shut down by Disney, a studio that’s obsessed with remakes and retelling the same stories ?
Don’t mind me. Just venting for the millionth time about a cartoon that didn’t get an ending and was basically murdered.🥺🥺
